About Dr. Joe Nalbone, D.C.
When patients ask me why I chose to become a chiropractor, my typical response is that I enjoy fixing things, more specifically, fixing people. As a kid I was always working on one thing or another. If something was broken, I was the one who gladly volunteered to fix it. If it had moving parts, I worked on it and fixed it.
"I like to think of myself as a human body mechanic. I fix the fixable parts, patch the patchable parts, and tune up your overall health."
— Dr. Joe Nalbone, D.C.
After working on most human-made mechanical things I realized that fixing the greatest biomechanical structure, a.k.a. human beings, was something I wanted to do for a living. The journey to get to where I am today is quite a story. Here's just a preview...
I attended Syracuse University in my home state of New York where I earned a Bachelor of Science in biology. At Syracuse I studied biology, chemistry, physics, computer programming, and for fun, minored in archaeology in an attempt to fill empty spots in my schedule. As I progressed through college my career path was naturally directed toward medicine but I also had a keen eye toward marine biology and at one point, historical/sub-Saharan archaeology.
As I approached my junior year I began to re-evaluate my life goals and purposes. I felt that the allopathic medical model was unfit for my personality and as for marine biology, well, I had one too many encounters with nasty sea critters. Whenever my time comes, I'd be thrilled to leave this earthly plane with all of my appendages still there and intact and in good working condition. The reality of a career in archaeology was slim being that I'd probably get lost in some ancient African ruins never to be seen again.
After graduation I took a plunge and chose none of the above by falling into the world of computer programming during the dot com rise. After long hours of sitting at a cubicle with very few breaks, my back began to give me grief. It got worse with biking and hiking which made my home life hell. My girlfriend (who's now my wonderful wife) told me to stop complaining and go see her chiropractor. Without hesitation, I took her advice because after all, her mom was a chiropractor and she'd seen them her entire life.
I went to see Dr. Smith in southeast Idaho and was amazed at the great results I got. The best part about all of this was that I experienced drastic pain relief without drugs, surgery, or having blood drawn. As I went through care I discovered that chiropractic dealt with more than just pain. I learned that an adjustment had the ability to restore the biomechanical joint function and in the process, take abnormal pressure off of the surrounding nerves. When this happens, the nerve interference from the brain to the body is removed allowing you to live at optimum health. From a scientific background, this made total sense to me.
It was at that point of my life when many things started falling into place for me. Even though I was one of the best programmers in the business and was making a good living, chiropractic was something that felt right to me. You could say my passion for fixing broken things was renewed!
Shortly thereafter I attended Western States Chiropractic College's four-year doctoral program in Portland Oregon where I learned how to harness my healing abilities and hone my diagnostic skills. Since that time I've been blessed to help thousands of people achieve their health care goals and am so happy being a chiropractor.
You know, every day's like my birthday when I'm in the office because my patients are like presents to me. I'm so grateful to be given the opportunity and privilege to help make a positive difference in another person's life. That alone is worth it all.
